Fall Round Up

Now that the leaves are falling and the weather is definitely getting cooler, it’s time to get really excited about fall.  In honor of that thought, we’ve rounded up our favorite things about fall.

1.) Pumpkin Spice Latte:  Yes yes, this is not exactly original, but it’s just so darn comforting!  A nice warm soothing treat for those rainy afternoons.  Get it half sweet without whip to avoid excessive sugar and calories.

2.) Big Comfy Sweaters:  Fashion is always changing, but there’s nothing like pulling on a beautiful soft, fluffy sweater that looks great and feels amazing.  And it’s more forgiving that most of our summer outfits!  There’s something about being warm and cozy on a cool day that just brings a smile to your face.  Invest in some really great fabrics.  Cheap sweaters can irritate your skin and wash badly.  A really good sweater can last several seasons, and if taken care of well, looks amazing every time.

3.) Crisp Fall Air:  The cold helps get some of the particles out of the air, so you’re left with fresh, clean and crisp air that almost has a taste.  It’s like drinking a pure clean class of water.  If you’re lucky enough to be in nature, the wonderful aroma of trees and leaves will hang wonderfully in the air.  It’s a great time to be outside and go far long walks.

4.) Roasted Root Vegetables:  Seasonal food eating is amazing!  Our summer was filled with fresh local berries and watermelon.  Turning on the oven was a chore because of the heat it caused, so unless it was BBQ’s, it was generally salads, smoothies and loads of garden vegetables.  But now is the time for the comforts of sweet potatoes, squash and beats!  If you’re a meat eater, which we are sometimes, this means roast chickens, savory turkey, and once in awhile a wonderful roast lamb.  Your ovens are going to start working again, so clean that thing out!  Get ready for roast meals and a whole new expanse of nutrients.

5.) Cozy Indoor Living:  All summer your home was probably wide open to the world (unless you’re the ‘close the doors the a/c is on’ type.)  At our house, every single window is open and every single door until fall hits.  Then it all slides almost closed, leaving just enough of a gap for fresh air, and the heat goes on.  Instead of stifling heat and wishing it were cooler, your home becomes a cozy retreat from the cold.  Fluffy blankets, thick socks and slippers add to the comfort with a cup of hot tea or chocolate.  This is the time to be cozy and snuggle down.

6.) Fall Decor:  Our summers were filled with sweet peas from the garden and fresh daisies.  But fall is a time for rich colors and natural accents.  The above picture shows adorable pumpkin candle holders that give a very fall warm glow in the evenings.  The front door has a new array of mums and and some non-flowering plants.  We even set the table with browns and reds, to really get into the spirit of things.

7.) Boots!:  We do love our boots, and now is the time to bring them all back out!  The great thing about boots is you can wear thick warm socks with them, and they become a huge part of any outfit.  Browns, blacks and some grays.  Boots are back!  Sometimes we build entire outfits around a cute pair of boots.

The thing about fall, is it brings with it the comfort of homes and the wonderful warmth of cozy living.  What are your favorite things about fall?  Let us know in the comments below.
